“MASAAN” is simple, yet deeply affecting and extremely engaging!
With a true-to-life screenplay, immaculate performances, striking theme, and a short runtime of less than 2 hours, this gem from director Neeraj Ghaywan is an absorbing account of lives in a small town which grips you while you’re watching it and stays with you even after you leave.
It’s a story of four characters struggling with the contradictions between tradition and their personal aspirations: a low caste boy hopelessly in love, a daughter ridden with guilt of a sexual encounter ending in a tragedy, a hapless father with fading morality, and a spirited child yearning for a family.
The beauty of this film lies in its life-like portrayal of events, backed by brilliant performances, soothing background score and all this with the splendid backdrop of Varanasi. The manner in which each character’s long to escape the moral constructs of a small-town is showcased, is poignant to say the least. Effectively sewing-in complex elements in a seemingly simple plot, and narrating it rivetingly, Ghaywan gives you ample food for thought while keeping you completely engrossed. There are moments that are touching and completely real. There is soul in each scene and the whole theme somehow blends in perfectly with its title (which means “crematory”), without ever getting dispiriting. It teaches you how you eventually have to fly away solo. There’s poetry in the dialogue that is truly thought provoking, and so are the lyrics of the few songs that are placed at crucial junctures. You have to see the film to really appreciate it, as any more disclosure will dilute the fun of watching this film.
Performances, without an exception are first-class. Richa Chadha, Sanjay Mishra and the newcomer Vicky Choudhary shine truly bright, portraying each emotion with perfect tenderness and displaying vivid layers in an adroit manner. These performances cannot be missed.
In all, MASAAN is poignant yet tender and heart-wrenching. Do not miss it!
