MISSION MANGAL is formulaic, but extremely engaging!

Filled with emotions, MISSION MANGAL is a film about space-science narrated in the quintessential Bollywood manner. However, delivering an entertaining account of the event, MISSION MANGAL is totally worth your time and money this weekend!

Inspired by true events that led up to ISRO`s Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), the film tells the story of a group of scientists who overcame their professional and personal tribulations to mastermind the greatest accomplishment in Indian space history. Mission Mangal is a tale of ordinary people doing extraordinary things and inspiring generations to dream big and achieve the impossible.

Frankly speaking, if you’re a fan of great space cinema, don’t expect this film to be up your alley. Because MISSION MANGAL epitomises the most mainstream experience that you can get in Bollywood. Most things will defy logic, but the film makes up for it through rich emotional drama and dexterous viewer manipulation. And being an Akshay Kumar film, it’s unfair to expect anything other than that. But what you do expect is a good entertaining time at the theatre, which the film delivers with élan.

You have lovable characters who are given back stories which you can invest into easily. Then there’s that usual underdog aspect that will keep you rooting for the protagonist, right till the very end. Add to that some manipulative patriotism which can stir the toughest of hearts. What you get eventually, is a richly rewarding emotional experience, even though it lacks sense. Going strictly by the text-book, this film will appear trash, as the activities it portrays are possibly the last things that will happen at ISRO. But if you’re ready to suspend disbelief, you won’t be disappointed. The screenplay is well-paced and the space-science concepts are explained in a manner that’s accessible by any layman.

The performances are just apt. Akshay Kumar and Vidya Balan get the most screentime, and they’re truly magnetic. Both of them keep you glued till the end, thanks to their engaging acts. The supporting cast is big, and they all perform very well. It’s a mainstream drama which never asks too much of its actors, and the actors deliver just what the doctor ordered.

To sum up, “MISSION MANGAL” is a film that inspires and entertains despite its formulaic treatment. It may not be the best of cinema, but it definitely finds place amidst the most entertaining ones. Totally deserves a watch, with family!
