RAKSHA BANDHAN is regressive and futile!

Poorly written, hurriedly shot (or so it seems) and incompetently presented, RAKSHA BANDHAN is perhaps the worst film to have released in 2022. Boasting of big names like Akshay Kumar and Director Aanand L. Rai, it’s a pity that the film turns out to be a cringeworthy, unwatchable product, despite a very short runtime of just 110 minutes. Totally avoidable!

The Plot: Lala Kedarnath (Akshay Kumar), the eldest and only brother of 4 sisters, runs a chaat shop that was started by his father. Lala promises his frail mother on her deathbed that he will get married only after he fulfils the responsibility of marrying his sisters into suitable homes first. What follows is Lala's relentless efforts of getting his four sisters married while upholding his family values.

While the trailer wasn’t really enticing, I went in for the film with expectations of a typical Aanand L. Rai film. Which basically means a breezy first half and some thought provoking conflict in the second. Alas, this one turned out to be an unbearable affair right from the word go. Set in the lanes of Chandni Chowk, the film reeks of low production values. Talking of “values”, the film upholds the age-old Indian values of getting the girls of the family married before their male siblings. And don’t expect that the film addresses this regressive theme by the climax. On the contrary, it maintains its stand in its favour till the very end.

Now, even if you ignore its regressive theme, the film is otherwise a big bore. Neither does the film manage to make you laugh, nor is it able to touch you emotionally. It’s all flimsy and pointless, and feels like a high school level family drama. Of the performances, none stands out. Basically this film doesn’t really need anyone to perform. It’s unbelievably banal and superficial. Akshay Kumar has lowered his standard further and needs some introspection before his next project comes out. I personally am at loss of more words to explain how ineffective this film is. So I stop right here.

All in all, RAKSHA BANDHAN is a clumsy retrograde drama that should be avoided at all costs!
