“SHAZAM!” is terrific fun!
In the ongoing attempts of DC universe at being more enjoyable and a worthy competition to the exuberant Marvel movies, “SHAZAM!” comes in as a welcome addition. It’s funny, sweet, charming, innocent and totally worth your time and money. Go for it, fun is guaranteed for viewers of all ages!
The film advocates that we all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson`s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word - SHAZAM! This streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still, a kid at heart-inside a ripped, godlike body, Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them!
Yes, this DC movie lacks the gravitas of say a “Dark Knight”, but thankfully, it also lacks the grimness, bleakness, darkness and self-seriousness which you usually associate with most DC movies. Eventually, it’s a pure fun ride that’s likeable by all age-groups. In a very light-hearted way, “SHAZAM!” reminds us that we have to grow up when the situation calls for it, but at the same time, it's okay to remain a child at heart and to have a brighter outlook on the world.
There are plenty of jokes, and the dialogue is quick and witty. The slight horror genre inclination of director Sandberg is also evident here, but that’s a minor transgression in an otherwise amusing fare. The performances are endearing across the board, going well with the theme of the film.
To sum up, “SHAZAM!” is a truly enjoyable superhero film, recommended for young and old. Watch it for a good time at the cinemas!
