SPIDER-MAN: Homecoming
SPIDER-MAN: Homecoming

“SPIDER-MAN: Homecoming” is fizzy, funny and heart-warming!

Breezy and pleasingly fresh, this reboot of the character as the newest star in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is packed with exciting surprises and quick-witted laughs, making it a superhero movie that viewers will love to spend time with, but not because it’s a superhero movie. Go for it – it’s fun for adults and kids alike.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine, distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man. But when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

The major highlight of the screenwriting here is found in the small stuff - the snappy high school scenes, Parker’s camaraderie with his best buddy Ned and his charming high school romance. They somehow overpower the extremely impressive CGI driven battle scenes. It’s the perfect combination of seamless and often stunning visual effects, fast-paced action, smooth writing, nods to the political churn in America, and an easily identifiable and charming hero that make this film wholesome and entertaining. The movie's not flawless, but it is great fun, and a big improvement over the Spider-Man movies of recent years. Add to it the excitement of the Avengers and you have a feast for all MCU fans. The performances are, needless to say, quite engaging.

To sum up, the film is far from perfect but the end result is effective. Thoroughly charming, Spider-Man's signature light comedy surprisingly fits well even in the darker Marvel Cinematic Universe. Recommended!
