STAR WARS – The Force Awakens
STAR WARS – The Force Awakens
“STAR WARS – The Force Awakens” is a powerful start to a new trilogy!
Packed with high-octane action through and through, the film is a cracking combination of great narrative heft with solid blockbuster attributes. The familiar characters presented with fresh energy, will make for a riveting watch for even the first time viewers of the franchise. And for those loyal old fans, the film will recall the series’ former glory and prove to be a treat beyond compare.
The film follows thirty years after the defeat of the Galactic Empire, when the galaxy faces a new threat from the evil Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) and the First Order. When a defector named Finn crash-lands on a desert planet, he meets Rey (Daisy Ridley), a tough scavenger whose droid contains a top-secret map. Together, the young duo joins forces with Han Solo (Harrison Ford) to make sure the Resistance receives the intelligence concerning the whereabouts of Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), the last of the Jedi Knights.
The Force Awakens is the first Star Wars made under the Walt Disney Co. umbrella. The film will act as the start of a new trilogy set after the events of Return of the Jedi. With this new instalment director Abrams plays it safe, and deliver an out-and-out crowd-pleaser. But whether it breaks any new ground? - not so much. So while it’s a pretty good start to this new trilogy, you can't help but think how great it might have been if the new crew had done their own thing and given us something new.
But that apart, in terms of storytelling the film streams by with terrific fluency. The visuals are striking and the 3D is quite delightful. The pacing of the screenplay too is just right and keeps you involved throughout its runtime of 135 odd minutes. It is very similar to the first Star Wars film, but with all the action, it isn't as family friendly. What’s commendable is the fact that even after so many years, this film still feels like a new beginning and there seems to be no end in sight, making you eagerly await the next instalment with equal fervour. The performances are solid across the cast, which boasts of veterans as well as newcomers, all displaying their mettle with panache.
In all, JJ Abram’s “STAR WARS – The Force Awakens” restores shine in this beloved franchise and indeed, you feel the force awakened. If you don’t mind heavy actioners, go for it!
